That’s because great print quality isn’t created by one decision – it’s created by lots of small ones, each building on the last, and all made long before anything reaches the printing press.
Understanding these decisions isn’t about becoming a print expert. It’s about recognising which decisions matter, when to ask the right questions, and why each one can have such a significant impact on how people experience your brand.
Many people assume production determines print quality – wrong!
Production is actually where all the earlier decisions you’ve already made come together. Because if the specification isn’t right, no amount of excellent printing can completely overcome it.
That’s why conversations about print quality should start much earlier, when there’s still time to influence the outcome rather than simply produce it.
The paper you choose can often be the very first physical interaction someone has with your brand. And without consciously thinking about it, people begin forming opinions the moment they pick something up.
A textured stock can feel crafted and premium, while an uncoated sheet may feel more natural and authentic. A heavier weight can communicate substance, while a lighter stock might be perfectly appropriate for a high-volume mailing where practicality matters and cost-effective is the message that needs to be supported.
The truth is, there isn’t one paper that’s “best” – the best choice is the one that supports what you’re trying to achieve.
Finishing is another area where small decisions make a surprisingly big difference.
Foiling, embossing, lamination, spot UV and other specialist finishes can add impact, but only when they’re used with purpose.
I’ve occasionally seen projects where every available finish has been added in the hope of making something feel more premium. Ironically, the result can feel less refined because every element is then competing for attention.
Sometimes the most effective finish is the one people barely notice, because it quietly enhances the design rather than distracting from it.
Many businesses expect colours to look exactly the same across every printed item, regardless of size, material or production method, but achieving that consistency isn’t automatic.
Consistency is influenced by artwork preparation, colour management, production techniques, and careful quality control throughout the process.
When these decisions are made well, your brochures, exhibition graphics, direct mail and marketing materials all feel like they belong to the same brand. Most people won’t notice why, they’ll simply experience consistency.
Very few people will comment on the paper weight you’ve chosen or the production method behind your latest brochure. What they do notice is how your business makes them feel. In fact, research into how touch influences consumer perception has shown that texture, weight and surface finish all contribute to the impressions people form about products and brands.
Does everything look polished and professional, feel considered, and reflect the quality they expect from your products or services?
Those impressions are formed in seconds, often without people consciously realising it. That’s why print quality isn’t just a technical consideration – it’s part of your brand experience. Every decision, from the paper stock through to the finishing, contributes to the confidence your printed materials inspire.
One of the biggest challenges with buying print is that you don’t know what you don’t know.
Unless you work in print every day, how would you know if a different paper stock would better reflect your brand? Or whether a particular finishing technique will genuinely enhance the design? Or if a small production decision today could prevent an expensive problem later?
That’s not a lack of knowledge – it’s simply experience.
Most businesses don’t buy print often enough to know every technical detail, and they shouldn’t have to. The value comes from having someone alongside you who knows which questions to ask before decisions become costly mistakes.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the most successful print projects rarely come down to one big decision – they’re the result of dozens of thoughtful ones.
That’s exactly why I developed our Print Wisdom®.
It’s a practical framework I’ve created for helping clients make better print decisions before anything goes to print. By connecting strategy, specification, production and delivery, we think through the choices that influence quality long before the presses start running.
And the result isn’t simply better print. It’s printed materials that reflect your brand, support your objectives and create the kind of experience you want your customers to remember.
If you’re wondering how to improve print quality, don’t start by asking which paper is best or which finish looks most impressive.
Start by asking whether the right decisions are being made from the beginning. Because the hidden decisions are often the ones that make the biggest difference.
If you’d like someone to help you navigate those decisions we’d love to help, so get in touch and let’s have a conversation.
